Call him Jonny Rotten,
Jonny Foul-ball, Jonny Despicable ~ call him
anything you like ~ but let there be no
mistaking the fact that Jon
Dalton of Survivor 7 Pearl Islands
made a distinct impression on us all.
Nobody much liked the guy one little bit.
His abrasive arrogance, caustic
self-righteousness, and wanton misogynism
are unsurpassed in the annals of Survivor lore. We'd
like to think that his show persona was
entirely contrived and tongue-in-cheek ~ but we're
not so sure.
All of which isn't even to mention a certain dirty lie
he parlayed to his advantage about the death
of his grandmother. In the end, Jon
returned from Panama a more despised villain
than Richard Hatch, Jerri Manthey, and Lex
Van Den Berghe combined. More despised
times ten.
On the other hand. . . what would S7 have been without
him? Had it not been for Jon ~ and
Rupert Boneham ~ Mark Burnett & gang
might've been hard-pressed to show an
interesting storyline at all.
But justice was served eventually. Jon finished
third after being defeated in the final
immunity challenge by Lillian Morris.
In a trial of endurance and strength, the
51-year-old housewife from Cincinnati clung
to a liferaft like an aerobics champion ~
and Jonny Rotten was gone. Even at
that though, many
wished he had been sent home much, much
sooner.
